How Philippine holiday pay works

The Philippine Labor Code, as implemented through annual DOLE labor advisories, distinguishes three categories of non-ordinary days: regular holidays, special non-working days, and special working days. Each has different pay rules. Knowing which category your day falls under is the first step to verifying your paycheck.

Regular holiday pay

On a regular holiday (e.g. Christmas Day, Independence Day, Labor Day), an employee is entitled to 100% of their daily wage even if they do not work, provided they were present or on paid leave the working day immediately before the holiday. If the employee works, they receive 200%of their daily rate for the first 8 hours. If the regular holiday also falls on the employee's rest day, the rate increases to 260%. Overtime beyond 8 hours is paid at +30% on top of the applicable holiday rate.

Special non-working day pay

On a special non-working day (e.g. Ninoy Aquino Day, All Saints' Day, Chinese New Year), the “no work, no pay” principle applies unless a company policy, employment contract, or collective bargaining agreement provides otherwise. Employees who work receive 130% of their daily rate for the first 8 hours, or 150% if the day also falls on their rest day.

Special working day pay

A special working day (e.g. the EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary on February 25, 2026) is treated as an ordinary working day: no premium pay applies unless the day also falls on the employee's rest day, in which case the 130% rest-day rate applies.

Night shift differential

Employees who work between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM are entitled to an additional 10% of their regular hourly rate for each hour worked within that period. On a holiday, this differential is computed on the applicable holiday-rate hourly wage, not the ordinary wage.

Frequently asked questions

What if I was absent the day before the holiday?

If you were absent without paid leave the working day immediately before a regular holiday, your employer may withhold the 100% holiday pay for not working that day. If you do work on the holiday, you still receive the 200% rate. Practices vary — always confirm with your HR.

Does this apply to BPO or call-center workers?

Yes. The DOLE pay rules apply to all employees covered by the Labor Code of the Philippines, regardless of industry. BPO workers working US shifts on a Philippine holiday are still entitled to the holiday rate.

Are managerial employees entitled to holiday pay?

No. Article 82 of the Labor Code excludes managerial employees, managerial staff, field personnel, and others from the holiday pay provisions. The rules in this calculator apply to rank-and-file employees.

What about 13th month pay?

13th month pay is separate from holiday pay. It must be paid on or before December 24 each year. The amount is equivalent to at least 1/12 of the employee's total basic salary earned during the calendar year. Use our dedicated 13th month pay calculator for the full computation.
